About the competition

Open competition of the designs for the best figurative sculptures depicting scenes from Henrik Ibsen's "Peer Gynt".

Host

The host of the competition is Selvaag, the parent company of several subsidiaries, including Selvaagbygg. Selvaagbygg is the group’s construction company. It has built 45,000 homes in and around Oslo since the first Selvaag home was completed in 1948. In the years to come, Selvaagbygg with its 700 employees plans to complete some 500 homes each year. "Løren" is Selvaagbygg's largest current housebuilding project in Oslo.

Selvaagbygg’s tradition of using sculpture to gratify and inspire the public, by placing works on Selvaag housing developments for instance, dates back to the fifties.

Aim

Oslo has the Munch Museum and Vigelandsparken (the Vigeland sculpture park), with works by the celebrated artists Edvard Munch and Gustav Vigeland. The Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen is known the world over, but there are few monumental depictions of his works. Selvaag Gruppen wants to generate the best designs of figurative sculptures based on Peer Gynt scenes that will suit our housing developments.

Selvaagbygg is developing a new Oslo district at Løren and this is our opportunity to distinguish the area with sculptures from Ibsen’s best-known work, “Peer Gynt”. Thus, the sculptures will be placed at Løren in Oslo.

Jury

The members of the jury are:

  • Ellen Horn, Director, Riksteatret
  • Kirsten Kokkin, Sculptor
  • Vigdis Ystad, Senter for Ibsenstudier (The Centre for Ibsen Studies)
  • Kim Brandstrup, Galleri Brandstrup
  • Peder Lund, Lund Fine Art
  • Kristian Blystad, Artist
  • Ole Gunnar Selvaag, President and CEO Selvaag

New competition

The jury is not committed to choosing/recommending one or any of the submitted designs for execution. If the jury judges the sculptures unsuitable, a new competition will be announced.
